What Is A Substance Use Disorder?
A substance use disorder (SUD) develops when you use alcohol or drugs in a harmful way. SUDs affect millions of Americans every year. Unfortunately, if left untreated, SUDs can lead to life-threatening circumstances and even fatalities. Therefore, it is vital that you seek early intervention right away.
The encouraging news is that SUDs can be treated. In fact, you can successfully overcome it and journey toward a sober life. At Serenity Springs Recovery, we offer you comprehensive, personalized care options combining traditional and modern methods to ensure your lasting recovery.
What Are The Types Of Substance Use Disorders?
The common types of SUDs are:
- Alcohol use disorder
- Tobacco use disorder
- Cannabis use disorder
- Opioid use disorder
- Cocaine use disorder
- Methamphetamine use disorder.
What Are The Symptoms Of Substance Use Disorders?
Typically, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) is used to diagnose SUDs. The signs and symptoms of a SUD as per the DSM-5-TR are:
- Strong cravings and urges to use the substance.
- Using the substance longer and more often than intended.
- Devoting a lot of time to obtain and use the substance.
- Using the substance despite its adverse impact on physical and psychological well-being.
- Using the substance despite its adverse impact on interpersonal relationships and social life.
- Prioritizing substance use over other responsibilities like studies or a job.
- Using the substance despite the danger it puts you in.
- Developing tolerance, which is needing more and more of the substance to achieve the desired effect.
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which are extremely unpleasant symptoms that can only be reduced by the substance.
What Are The Types Of Treatments For Substance Use Disorders?
There is more than one type of treatment for a SUD, depending on the duration and severity of the disorder. Severe SUD requires medically supervised detoxification and residential treatment. Some cases might even require round-the-clock supervision. Meanwhile, mild to moderate SUD can be treated in an outpatient setting.
Serenity Springs is an outpatient treatment center that provides the following treatment options for SUDs:
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – Serenity Springs’ PHP is an intensive, structured program that offers outpatient care. It is intensive and also flexible in that you do not have to stay at a hospital or facility. You can stay in the comfort of your home or a sober living facility at night. PHP entails psychotherapy, medication management, social support, and other healthcare services.
Our PHP runs for five days a week and can run up to 8 hours a day.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – Serenity Springs’ IOP is an intensive, structured program. It is a step down from PHP but offers similar intensive, structured care. At the same time, it offers the flexibility for you to fulfill your other daily commitments. Moreover, we have evening IOPs (or evening tracks) for students and working professionals. With the evening IOP, you can focus on your studies/career while also receiving the care you need and deserve without having to juggle between the two.
Our IOP runs up to 9 hours in a week.

Is Substance Use Disorder Treatment Covered By Insurance?
Yes, SUD treatment is covered by insurance. The Affordable Care Act believes that your behavioral health is an essential health benefit in the U.S. Therefore, most insurance policies cover SUD treatment. To find out the exact extent of coverage, you can speak with your insurance provider.
