What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
An intensive outpatient program (IOP), as the name suggests, is an outpatient care option for behavioral and mental health conditions. IOP can be the right fit for you if you need something more intensive than typical outpatient visits and something less intensive than a residential program or 24/7 medical or psychiatric supervision. In fact, it can also be the right care option for you if you are transitioning from higher-intensity programs to the outside world.
Generally speaking, you spend 9 hours per week in IOP, typically delivered in three 3-hour sessions. You will receive therapy, medication management, and other services in one program. While being intensive, IOP also provides you with the flexibility for you to perform your daily responsibilities and return to the comfort of your home after treatment.
What Services Are Offered To Me In An IOP?
The services that will be provided to you in Serenity Springs Recovery’s IOP are as follows:
- One-on-one therapy
- One-on-one counseling
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Psychoeducation
- Medication management
- Relapse prevention
- Skills training
- Physical health care
- Care coordination
- Case management
- Aftercare
- Ongoing care.
What Can I Expect From An IOP?

- Family therapy
- Psychoeducation
- Periodic assessments.
The therapies we provide involve evidence-based therapies like motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and other therapies. They will be conducted by licensed and skilled mental health practitioners.
Medication management will be provided when the need arises. You will collaborate with psychiatrists as they prescribe, monitor, and adjust the medication as per your needs and goals.
Holistic methods like creative activities, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and other complementary therapies will also be used, as they are immensely beneficial when used alongside traditional therapies.
IOP is condition-specific, based on your behavioral or mental health condition. It is also personalized and tailored to meet your needs and goals, as we believe your journey toward healing and recovery is just as unique as you are.
What Are The Conditions Treated In An IOP?
IOPs are used to treat a broad spectrum of behavioral and mental health conditions:

Is IOP The Right Treatment Program For Me?
An intensive treatment program can be the right care option for you if:
- Your diagnosis requires the kind of intensive care that an IOP provides.
- You are struggling with mild to moderate behavioral or mental health conditions.
- You are at an increased risk of relapse or have experienced relapse before.
- You do not require 24/7 medical or psychiatric supervision.
- You have already completed higher intensive residential programs.
- Your condition has stabilized to the point that it can be treated in an outpatient setting.
- You are willing to attend, participate, and engage with all the activities that are required of you.
- You have a loving, supportive environment to go home to or live at a sober living facility.
- You can travel to and fro the treatment center.
How Can I Find A Good IOP For Me?
IOPs are offered by treatment centers, hospitals, and clinics. To find an IOP that is good for you, you can ask your primary healthcare provider for a reference. You can also ask your family, friends, or other trusted members so that they can refer you to an IOP.
You can even go online and search for “IOPs near me.” From the list, you can look up their websites, read testimonials, and even visit the facility to get a clearer picture.
Serenity Springs offers you condition-specific, personalized IOP. Our team will collaborate with you and decide the right care options for you going ahead.
How Much Can An IOP Cost Me?
The cost of an IOP varies from one treatment center to another. The cost also depends on your unique needs, types of care options, location, and other factors. Generally speaking, an IOP cost can depend on:
- Duration of the program.
- Types of care services offered.
- The number of specialists involved.
- Location of the IOP center.
- Insurance coverage.
Will My Insurance Cover IOP?
Yes, your insurance must cover IOP, as the Affordable Care Act considers behavioral and mental health to be essential health benefits in the U.S. However, to understand the extent of coverage, you need to speak with your insurance provider.
